Abstract
Workforce shortages continue to present a significant challenge for the NHS, and bank and agency nurses have become an established part of the workforce rather than a contingency measure. The use of temporary nurses has raised concerns relating to care quality, team functioning and patient safety. However, when appropriately supported, temporary nurses can contribute to clinical expertise and provide flexibility and resilience for pressurised services. This narrative literature review explores the risks and benefits associated with the use of temporary nurses. Many of the challenges linked to temporary staffing appear to arise not from the staffing model itself, but from inconsistent leadership, inadequate induction procedures and limited organisational support. The author identifies strategies for nurse managers and leaders to reduce the risks involved in employing temporary nurses and optimise their contribution to clinical teams.
