Abstract
This study investigates the effect of nanoclay incorporation on the properties of chloroprene rubber (CR)/natural rubber (NR) blends, with a primary objective of enhancing mechanical performance, curing behaviour, solvent resistance, and durability for advanced engineering applications. Nanocomposites were prepared using a 50/50 CR/NR blend with varying nanoclay loadings of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 phr (parts per hundred rubber) via a two-roll mill and subsequently vulcanised at 160 °C in a compression mould. Comprehensive characterisation included tensile strength, stress at 100% elongation, hardness, elongation at break, tear strength, rebound resilience, compression set, swelling, and abrasion resistance. Curing analysis revealed that nanoclay accelerated vulcanisation and increased torque values, indicating higher crosslink density. Up to 6 phr nanoclay, tensile strength and stress at 100% elongation improved by 31% and 32%, respectively, while tear strength increased by 43%. Beyond this loading, these properties declined. Elongation at break and rebound resilience decreased with increasing nanoclay, whereas hardness, tear strength, and compression set consistently rose. Solvent interaction studies were performed using eleven solvents—benzene, toluene, xylene, mesitylene, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, dichloromethane, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride—providing insight into the swelling behaviour of nanocomposites in both aromatic/aliphatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents. The results demonstrate that optimal nanoclay content improves mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and solvent resistance, supporting its potential use in demanding industrial environments.
