Abstract

In this paper, we propose new fast-response liquid crystal (LC) devices with virtual walls. These new devices have alternating LC alignment directions, which can be generated by using photoalignment technology. These new devices can offer enhanced response speed as well as improved viewing angle characteristics. By choosing different types of “local” LC molecular arrangements, we are able to change the virtual-wall pitch length and hence also change the response speed and transmission of these devices. These new designs can potentially offer an innovative approach to generate virtual walls for these fast-response LC devices.
