Abstract
Carbonization is one of the key processes for the preparation of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers. During the carbonization process, the pore structure within the fiber undergoes complex changes that can be monitored using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). This paper introduces the carbonization mechanism of PAN-based fibers and the basic principles and methods of SAXS, reviews the application of SAXS in the study of the carbonization process of PAN pre-oxidized fibers, and looks forward to the prospect of using synchrotron radiation as the X-ray source for SAXS in situ study of the fiber carbonization process.
