Abstract
Aims
This study was conducted to provide a phenomenological perspective on pediatric fasciotomy and carers’ experiences following the earthquake.
Background
Children can be severely affected by an earthquake, and this can have a lifelong impact on their lives.
Method
This study was conducted as a phenomenological study with 10 children and their parents/caregivers who underwent fasciotomy surgery in the Kahramanmaraş earthquake between January and March 2024.
Results
It was found that 50% of the children who participated in our study were female, and their mean age was 14.60 ± 2.54 years. It was found that all the children’s houses were destroyed in the earthquake, they were trapped under the rubble, and they experienced losses in their family members and relatives. Three main themes and 9 sub-themes emerged from the analysis of the data.
Conclusion
Our study found that destructive disasters such as earthquakes have long-term emotional and psychological effects with feelings of fear, loneliness, helplessness, and hopelessness beyond physical injuries in children who underwent fasciotomy surgery. Similarly, it has been observed that parents/carers also experience feelings of helplessness, loneliness, and hopelessness in this process, and their efforts to support their children also affect their own emotional processes.
