Abstract
This study intends to develop and characterize the novel Magnesium (Mg) Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) reinforced with FeCoCrNiMn High Entropy Alloy (HEA) through powder metallurgy. The equiatomic FeCoCrNiMn HEA is synthesised through ball milling and mixed with Mg matrix at different weight percentages (0, 5, 10 and 15). The developed Mg and its HEA added composites were analysed for microstructure, density, microhardness, wear and corrosion behaviour. Composites with uniform HEA dispersion with minimal porosity was observed at lower reinforcement percentages and particle agglomeration was noted for 15 % HEA addition. The density of the Mg increased with HEA addition as a result of high dense filler and the microhardness was found increasing with every HEA addition concurrently the wear resistance increased. Enhancement in corrosion resistance with HEA addition is noted from the shifts towards more cathodic potentials and reduced corrosion rates. This study highlights the potential of HEA reinforcement to enhance the mechanical and corrosion properties of Mg-based composites for engineering applications.
