Abstract
Although urban planning has long advocated for more intuitive visual design methods, immersive visualization and interaction approaches tailored to non-professional stakeholders remain limited. To address this challenge, we propose UPDesign, an urban planning visualization interaction approach that supports on-site creation, modification, and drawing. This paper introduces the design and implementation of UPDesign, highlights improvements in interaction manipulation, and evaluates the user experience. Results show that UPDesign, by combining gesture and speech input in a mixed reality (MR) environment, efficiently supports the rapid conception and expression of design alternatives, demonstrating good universality. This study offers a new pathway for applying MR technology in urban planning, providing non-professional users with a low-threshold, user-friendly tool that helps overcome the limitations of existing MR approaches in interactivity and usability.

The International Journal of Human-Computer Studies publishes original research over the whole spectrum of work relevant to the theory and practice of innovative interactive systems. The journal is inherently interdisciplinary, covering research in computing, artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics, communication, design, engineering, and social organization, which is relevant to the design, analysis, evaluation and application of innovative interactive systems. Papers at the boundaries of these disciplines are especially welcome, as it is our view that interdisciplinary approaches are needed for producing theoretical insights in this complex area and for effective deployment of innovative technologies in concrete user communities.
Research areas relevant to the journal include, but are not limited to:
• Innovative interaction techniques
• Multimodal interaction
• Speech interaction
• Graphic interaction
• Natural language interaction
