Abstract

Introduction

Conclusion

Introduction

The third cycle reform of medical studies implemented a new structuration for residency programs, and created for the anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative medicine specialty a ‘consolidation phase’. This phase is the fifth and last year of residency, and focuses on progressive and supervised autonomy, in order to ease the transition to lone practice.

Methods

Three months after the start of their ‘consolidation phase’, the first two promotions that underwent the third cycle reform (2021–2022 and 2022–2023) were invited to complete this national descriptive survey, which focused on the practical conditions and the emotional well-being of the students concerned.

Results

We gathered 176 answers from 920 targeted students (19.1%). Respondents were predominantly male (59.7%), around 29 [28–30] years old. They were employed in public hospitals for 94.4% of them. While reported autonomy for clinical tasks was quite high, organizational duties, teaching, and clinical research were generally not performed autonomously. Respondents were dealing quite well with their new responsibilities (median score above 7/10 across all of the aspects considered), and with a moderate level of stress (4/10 median). This ‘consolidation phase’ was perceived as useful by most of the students.

Conclusion

The implementation of the ‘consolidation phase’ as wanted by the third cycle reform has been quite straightforward and well perceived by students, although its educational value remains to be evaluated.
