Abstract

To elucidate the reaction mechanisms between functional groups of reactive rejuvenators and the molecular architecture of styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer (SBS), this study systematically investigates the rejuvenation effects of a monofunctional rejuvenator, dodecenyl succinic anhydride (DDSA) and a bifunctional rejuvenator, 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (MDA) on aged SBS modified asphalt (SBSMA) incorporating linear and star-shaped SBS with different block ratios. The macroscopic properties and microstructural evolution of the rejuvenated binders were evaluated. The results show that the molecular architecture and block ratio of SBS have a significant effect on the aging sensitivity and rejuvenation response of SBSMA. Both rejuvenators effectively mitigate aging-induced hardening and successfully reconstruct the characteristic phase angle plateau of SBSMA. DDSA primarily promotes the reconstruction of the SBS polymer network, enhances chain flexibility and showing superior performance in low-temperature rheological recovery. In contrast, owing to its bifunctional molecular structure, MDA more effectively reconstructs polymer network junctions in star-shaped SBS systems, thereby significantly enhancing high-temperature performance and fatigue resistance. Gel permeation chromatography and fluorescence microscopy analyses further confirm that MDA achieves a more substantial recovery of the SBS large molecular weight region and the three-dimensional polymer network in star-shaped systems compared with DDSA. The rejuvenation efficiency of reactive rejuvenators is governed not only by their functional group characteristics but also by the molecular architecture and block ratio of SBS. This study reveals the differentiated rejuvenation mechanisms of reactive rejuvenators from the perspective of molecular structure matching, providing a theoretical basis for the targeted rejuvenation of SBSMA and the molecular design of rejuvenators.

Construction and Building Materials offers an international platform for sharing innovative and original research and development in the realm of construction and building materials, along with their practical applications in new projects and repair practices. The journal publishes a diverse array of pioneering research and application papers, detailing laboratory investigations and, to a limited extent, numerical analyses or reports on full-scale projects. Multi-part papers are discouraged. Additionally, Construction and Building Materials features comprehensive case studies and insightful review articles that contribute to new insights in the field. Our focus is on papers related to construction materials, excluding those on structural engineering, geotechnics, and unbound highway layers. Covered materials and technologies encompass cement, concrete reinforcement, bricks and mortars, additives, corrosion technology, ceramics, timber, steel, polymers, glass fibers, recycled materials, bamboo, rammed earth, non-conventional building materials, bituminous materials, and applications in railway materials.
