Abstract
The detection and recovery of gold from electronic waste (e-waste) are crucial for environmental protection and resource sustainability. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel one-dimensional (1D) fluorescent covalent organic framework (DABI-COF) from 1,3,6,8-tetra(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) and 5,6-diaminobenzimidazol-2-one (DABI) for dual-mode detection and photocatalytic recovery of gold from e-waste. DABI-COF with abundant recognition sites enables rapid and specific responses to gold ions, with fluorescence quenching via a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism and a visible color change from bright yellow to dark green, achieving fluorescent and colorimetric sensing with a low detection limit of 13.33 nM. Furthermore, under visible light irradiation, DABI-COF demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic recovery of gold with shorter equilibration time (10 min) and higher adsorption capacity (up to 3906.5 mg g−1) than those in the dark condition. Practical applications in real e-waste leachate confirm its excellent selectivity and high efficiency (> 90 %) for gold recovery. This work highlights the great potential of 1D COFs in the dual-functional detection and photocatalytic recovery of precious metals from e-waste.
