Abstract
In this study, 1,10-phenanthroline (OP) was employed as an organic sensitizing ligand for Eu3+, and three Eu3+/OP silica gel fluorescent nanomaterials were prepared via a sol-gel route using tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), and phenyltrimethoxysilane (TMPS) as silica matrices. The enhanced fingerprint developing performance is attributed to combined effects: (1) OP acts as an efficient “antenna” to absorb UV light and transfer energy to Eu3+, which allows high-intensity characteristic red emission; (2) Encapsulation in the silica gel forms a microenvironment around the Eu3+/OP complexes, which can reduce quenching effects of the surrounding environment; and (3) the surface of the silica gel provides numerous adhesion sites for sebaceous residues, which promotes selective deposition on ridge details and enhances contrast. Using both powder and suspension methods, fingerprints were developed with clear ridge patterns and visible level 2 and level 3 features on various porous/nonporous and smooth/rough substrates. The fingerprints aged (up to 100 days) or soaked in water (up to 50 days) were also successfully developed. These materials show great potential for forensic fingerprint development.

The Microchemical Journal is a peer reviewed journal devoted to all aspects and phases of analytical chemistry and chemical analysis. The Microchemical Journal publishes articles which are at the forefront of modern analytical chemistry and cover innovations in the techniques to the finest possible limits. This includes fundamental aspects, instrumentation, new developments, innovative and novel methods and applications including environmental and clinical field.
Traditional classical analytical methods such as spectrophotometry and titrimetry as well as established instrumentation methods such as flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, gas chromatography, and modified glassy or carbon electrode electrochemical methods will be considered, provided they show significant improvements and novelty compared to the established methods.
