Abstract

Postoperative pain has long been considered an acute, transient phenomenon that resolves favorably. However, nearly one in four patients still experiences persistent pain beyond surgery, sometimes severe and debilitating. Between the acute phase and chronic pain, a key period — that of transitional pain — is now emerging as a crucial window for preventing chronicity. Early identification of abnormal pain patterns, screening for a neuropathic component, adjusting treatment, and supporting the patient are all concrete actions within the anesthesiologist's reach during this period. Transitional pain also presents a medical and economic challenge: the need to recognize medical time, educational approaches, and innovative techniques that are still undervalued. The development of units dedicated to managing transitional pain could offer a structured and coherent response to this issue, integrating prevention, monitoring, and coordination. By focusing on transitional pain, the anesthesiologist becomes a key player in ensuring continuity of care and the well-being of their patients, within a modern, preventative, and personalized approach.
