Abstract
The cured photonic crystal microspheres was prepared through a soft template of water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) multiple emulsion, where poly(styrene/methacrylic acid)@polydopamine (P(St/MAA)@PDA) nanoparticles dispersed in water to build liquid colloidal crystals (LCCs) as the inner water phase. P(St/MAA)@PDA nanoparticles were prepared by in situ polymerization of dopamine (DA) on the surface of P(St/MAA) nanoparticles. P(St/MAA)@PDA LCCs with highly saturated colors were obtained owing to PDA absorbing incoherent scattered light. As the mass ratio of PDA to P(St/MAA) nanoparticles increased from 0.1 to 0.5, the arrangement of P(St/MAA)@PDA nanoparticles changed from long-range ordering to short-range ordering, and the angular dependence of the LCCs color gradually disappeared. As the mass fraction of P(St/MAA)@PDA nanoparticles ranged from 20% to 40%, the LCCs had angular dependent and bright color. The content of W/O emulsifier influenced the color phase and brightness of the cured microspheres. The cured microspheres with different sizes were obtained through adjusting the second emulsifying time to form W/O/W emulsion. Finally, the cured microspheres with blue, green and red colors were prepared by controlling the particle size of P(St/MAA) nanoparticles. P(St/MAA)@PDA microspheres with highly saturated structural colors can be directly applied as photonic crystal pigments in coatings and cosmetics without secondary assembly.
