Abstract
Upconversion nanophosphors are synthesized by Er3+ (1 %)/Yb3+ (40 %) co-doping of hexagonal NaYF4 in the presence of a transition metal ion Cr3+ by hydrothermal method. Cr3+ ion concentration was systematically increased in steps of 5 % (0–20 %) to study the effect of doping concentration. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the formation of the hexagonal phase for the nanophosphors. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study showed successful rare earth and Cr3+ ion doping into the lattice. An order of magnitude enhancement of green luminescence was observed upon doping the systems with Cr3+ ions. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity shows maximum at 15 % Cr3+ doping. Temperature dependent PL study indicates its high sensitivity. The colour purity of the system is found to be 97 %. Nonlinear optical studies showed the manifestation of reverse saturable absorption phenomenon owing to the sequential multiphoton absorption and energy transfer mechanism. This phenomenon is useful in imaging applications.
