Abstract
Objective
This study aimed to develop and validate a novel, integrated dynamic wrinkle assessment system based on standardized, real-time and multi-angle facial images and video recordings, and to explore its potential application in evaluating the anti-wrinkle efficacy of skincare products.
Methods
A standardized protocol was developed for a novel system integrating a high-precision positioning apparatus with synchronized, multi-angle high-speed cameras to capture facial expressions from a neutral to a maximal state. To ensure longitudinal consistency, a novel algorithm was used to select analysis frames based on angular congruence. The system's reproducibility and accuracy were validated by expert dermatologists using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The system's feasibility and effectiveness were assessed in an 8-week anti-wrinkle cream efficacy trial.
Results
The integrated dynamic wrinkle evaluation system demonstrated high inter-rater reliability (ICC >0.70) across 35 Chinese women, with ICC values exceeding 0.900 for key facial areas. In an anti-aging efficacy trial (n = 42), the system successfully detected and quantified significant improvements (p < 0.05) in both static and dynamic wrinkles following product use.
Conclusion
This study successfully developed and validated an all-in-one dynamic wrinkle photo grading evaluation system for personalized assessment of treatment outcomes following topical application of cosmetic products. The high accuracy of the clinician evaluations offers a new approach for assessing the effects of anti-aging skincare and cosmetic products, surpassing traditional static assessment methods.
期刊介绍:
The Journal publishes original refereed papers, review papers and correspondence in the fields of cosmetic research. It is read by practising cosmetic scientists and dermatologists, as well as specialists in more diverse disciplines that are developing new products which contact the skin, hair, nails or mucous membranes.
The aim of the Journal is to present current scientific research, both pure and applied, in: cosmetics, toiletries, perfumery and allied fields. Areas that are of particular interest include: studies in skin physiology and interactions with cosmetic ingredients, innovation in claim substantiation methods (in silico, in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo), human and in vitro safety testing of cosmetic ingredients and products, physical chemistry and technology of emulsion and dispersed systems, theory and application of surfactants, new developments in olfactive research, aerosol technology and selected aspects of analytical chemistry.
