Abstract

Sensors are antennae, to gain data of chemical and biological surroundings. The sensitive coating is the needle eye of this strategy, molecularly chemical and biological recognition must be realized in this way. The method of Molecular Imprinting of Polymers (MIP) was developed in the last three decades which leads to robust synthetic antibodies. Chemical analytes or biological particles can be surrounded by cross-linked polymers. Thus, a cavity is generated as in host-guest chemistry which is able to reversibly reinclude analytes. The chemical information is transformed in an electrical signal in combination with a physical transducer. This will be discussed primarily by mass sensitive sensors for the detection of lean and more complex molecules but also for viruses up to whole cells.
