Part-Time New Graduate Nurses in Acute Care: Evaluation of Nurse Residency Outcomes

Abstract

The administration of a statewide nurse residency collaborative in acute care observed growth in enrollment of part-time nurse residents. In this secondary analysis, the outcomes of their nurse residency were examined to determine opportunities to enhance residents’ success. Results showed variances between part-time and full-time nurse residents in categories including support, communication/leadership, professional satisfaction, and stress in personal life. Part-time nurse residents also had a 4.1% lower one-year retention rate compared to full-time nurse residents. Strategies to enhance nurse residency programs for part-time nurse residents were discussed.
