Abstract
Advanced materials are required for lithium-ion battery packs to mitigate impact and fire risks. Unlike conventional foams that offer only passive cushioning with limited energy absorption and flammability, this study develops lightweight composite foam SAE through a hybrid compression foaming process. This material uniquely integrates strain-rate-sensitive hardening properties, V-0 flame retardancy, and thermal stability. The results show that the composite layer with a 5 mm thickness absorbed up to 89 % of maximum impact energy in a drop hammer test, and demonstrated resistance to penetration under anti-impact test by a 0.721 g aluminum ball at an initial velocity of 180 km/h. In battery pack applications, SAE reduces peak impact forces by 20 % and prevents thermal runaway propagation, demonstrating its multifunctional innovative value as a next-generation safety solution for energy equipment.
期刊介绍:
The past few decades have seen outstanding advances in the use of composite materials in structural applications. There can be little doubt that, within engineering circles, composites have revolutionised traditional design concepts and made possible an unparalleled range of new and exciting possibilities as viable materials for construction. Composite Structures, an International Journal, disseminates knowledge between users, manufacturers, designers and researchers involved in structures or structural components manufactured using composite materials.
The journal publishes papers which contribute to knowledge in the use of composite materials in engineering structures. Papers deal with design, research and development studies, experimental investigations, theoretical analysis and fabrication techniques relevant to the application of composites in load-bearing components for assemblies, ranging from individual components such as plates and shells to complete composite structures.
