Abstract
Objective
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition closely associated with vascular health and endothelial function. This study aimed to evaluate the possible effects of magnesium (Mg) deficiency on ED by comparing serum Mg levels between patients diagnosed with ED and healthy individuals.
Methods
This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on male patients, who presented to the urology outpatient clinic between June 2022 and January 2023. The study included 126 patients diagnosed with ED (Group 1) and 115 individuals without ED complaints (Group 2). The severity of ED was classified according to IIEF-5 scores.
Results
Biochemical serum analyses revealed that the serum Mg levels of the ED group (Group 1, 1.99 ± 0.17) were significantly lower compared to the control group (Group 2, 2.11 ± 0.19, p < 0.001). Additionally, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were significantly higher in the ED group than in the control group (p < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis determined the best cut-off value for Mg levels in predicting ED as 1.84 mg/dL (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.515). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test results indicated a significant difference in Mg levels among groups classified according to ED severity (p < 0.001).
Conclusion
This study demonstrated that serum Mg levels were significantly lower in patients with ED compared to the control group and that there is a significant association between Mg levels and ED severity. Although these findings suggest an association between lower Mg levels and ED, causal inferences cannot be made, and the ROC analysis showed only limited discriminative ability (AUC = 0.515). Further prospective and interventional studies are warranted to clarify this relationship.
