Abstract
Contexte
Conclusion
Background
Pediatric anesthesia requires not only specific knowledge but also clinical and technical skills. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the training of French nurse anesthetists in pediatric anesthesia.
Methods
An email survey including 41 questions was sent to the educational directors of French nurse anesthetists schools (March–May 2024). Data were collected regarding the content of theoretical and practical teaching in pediatric anesthesia, the evaluation methods, the opinions of educational directors, and the specific characteristics of pediatric teaching within the schools.
Results
The survey was sent to all 29 French nurse anesthetists schools, with a response rate of 48% (14/29 schools). The mean duration of theoretical teaching was 17 (11) hours during the first year and 14 (6.5) hours during the second year. The duration of the pediatric anesthesia clinical placement was four weeks in all participating schools. For 86% of educational directors, the time dedicated to theoretical training in pediatric anesthesia was sufficient, while 50% considered the time allocated to practical training to be insufficient.
Conclusion
This study, the first national overview of French nurse anesthetists training in pediatric anesthesia, highlights disparities in teaching among nurse anesthetists schools. The findings also suggest a perceived insufficiency in pediatric anesthesia training. They support the need to establish a common framework and professional and educational reference standards for French nurse anesthetists training in pediatric anesthesia.
