Abstract
Our understanding of leukocyte biology in uninjured lungs and lung disease is impacted in critically important ways by the work of James C. Hogg, MD, PhD. The creative ideas he tested and the novel approaches he brought to in vivo and in vitro studies have left an irrefutable imprint on present thinking in leukocyte pathobiology. He was the founding Director of the UBC Pulmonary Research Laboratory, and he and Peter Paré built an exceptional place for important and clinically relevant lung research and for training of scientists. His studies of leukocyte kinetics in pneumonia, acute lung injury, cigarette smoking and other environmental toxicants, and both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease changed the direction of our thinking about the pathogenesis of lung disease. From 1984-1991, he was my mentor and teacher, and our work formed the basis of my research ever since.
