Abstract
Children suffering from respiratory tract infections are at high risk of perioperative respiratory complications. The management of these patients before and during anesthesia has been highly variable, with the key question being: should the child be refused surgery or not, and on what grounds? Many so-called preventive measures have been studied and validated to reduce the occurrence of the respiratory complications. The combination of these techniques now makes it possible to perform anesthesia with maximum safety despite the presence of respiratory tract infections and has reduced the list of causes likely to lead to the postponement of interventions.
