Abstract

The scope of this study was to describe and summarize the effects and characteristics of parental environmental and occupational exposure to pesticides on the development of childhood cancer. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted in the VHL, MEDLINE, Pubmed, SciELO, Lilacs and BDENF databases, based on a question formulated based on the PICOS strategy and the recommendations of the Prisma declaration. Cohort and case-control studies that investigated the association between parental exposure and childhood cancer were included. The findings were systematized by themes and thematic categories. A total of 116 articles were found, of which 20 articles were included based on the SLR criteria. Environmental parental exposure to pesticides in the home was more frequent. The main occupational exposure was agricultural work. Exposure occurred in the pre-conception period, pregnancy or early childhood, mainly to pesticides from the herbicide and organophosphate insecticide chemical groups. Of the 20 articles included, only 2 did not identify any association. The others indicate an association or increased chance of childhood cancer in occupational and environmental parental exposure to pesticides, especially leukemia.
