Abstract

In order to analyze the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD) in adults and the elderly in Teresina, Piauí, a household-based survey (EpiCOVID-Piauí) was conducted from March to November of 2022, including groups of adults and the elderly. The CMD outcome was assessed according to sociodemographic variables, health status, food consumption and lifestyle. The prevalence of CMD was 31.3% (95%CI 27.9-34.9), associated with the female gender (RP= 3.77; 95%CI 1.40-10.12) and regular consumption of alcoholic beverages (RP= 4.54; 95%CI 1.16-17.8). One third of the study population had CMD, with a higher prevalence among females who reported regular alcohol consumption. The adoption of healthy habits, such as lifestyle changes, are recommendations suggested to mitigate possible impacts of the pandemic in relation to CMD, reflecting a readjustment in the personal and social lives of individuals in the post-pandemic era.
