Good science and engineering: Unravelling the black box of implantation.

Abstract

Human implantation has historically been difficult to characterize because of ethical and practical issues. Animal models have been helpful but are often species-specific and not reflective of human implantation. Collaboration between engineers and physician-scientists has resulted in novel in vitro models that can be helpful for direct observation of normal and abnormal human processes.
