Abstract

Objective

The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of sleep hygiene measures on sleep quality of adolescents with mental health disorder(s) admitted in inpatients wards of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Method

This is a quasi-experimental study in which a total of 77 adolescents with mental health disorder(s) were recruited using convenience sampling and then assigned to two groups of control and intervention. Data were collected using a socio-demographic and clinical profile questionnaire, semi-structured sleep pattern questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale at three time-points before, 1 week, and 2 weeks after the intervention. Patients in the intervention group received sleep hygiene intervention (3 sessions over a maximum of three days) with a regular follow-up. Data were analysed with SPSS software version 27 using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, Fisher's Exact test, independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Aligned Rank Transform Analysis of Variance.

Results

The results of the present study indicated that there was a significant difference in the median score of the overall sleep quality and sleep hygiene and most of their sub-domains between the intervention and control group at one and two weeks after the intervention.

Conclusion

Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that the sleep hygiene intervention program which is cost-effective and easy to administer, can improve the sleep quality of adolescents having mental health disorder(s).
