Abstract
This study evaluates the gamma radiation shielding performance of concretes fabricated with locally mined barite ores: high-grade barite ore (HGBO), charcoal barite ore (CBO), and low-grade barite ore (LGBO). Using the Phy-X simulation method at energies of 0.15–0.826 MeV and a water-cement ratio of 0.6, the measured densities for HGBO, CBO, and LGBO were 2.37, 2.28, and 2.21 g/cm3, respectively. HGBO displayed the highest linear attenuation coefficient (0.330 cm⁻1 at 0.15 MeV), lowest HVL (2.10 cm), and best thermal stability (27.4% weight loss at 1200 °C). Results confirm HGBO concrete as a cost-effective, eco-friendly, lead-free shielding material for nuclear and medical applications.
