Abstract
Aim and background: Pharmacological behavior management techniques employing sedation or general anesthesia (GA) are an accepted means of delivering quality dental treatments to children; however, the impact of these interventions on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children needs to be assessed. The present systematic review aimed to assess and compare the OHRQoL in children treated under GA or sedation.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted across various search engines. Trials and observational studies that evaluated the OHRQoL for various sedation and anesthesia procedures in children were included. Mean with standard deviation of OHRQoL scores before and after the interventions was extracted from eligible studies. A random-effects model was used to perform meta-analysis. The I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity, and publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots. The certainty of evidence was assessed using GRADE.
Results: The pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) with confidence interval (CI) for OHRQoL before and after GA using the random-effects model was CIS-1.192 (0.702 to 1.683), FIS-1.246 (0.971 to 1.520), ECOHIS-1.769 (1.190 to 2.348), and P-CPQ-1.759 (1.145 to 2.372) across nonrandomized controlled trials (n-RCTs). The certainty of evidence was found to be low. Overall, significant improvements were noted in children's OHRQoL post-GA.
Conclusion: Dental treatment under GA/sedation significantly improves the OHRQoL of children, with the certainty of evidence being low.
