Abstract
A peritonsillar abscess is a common infection in young adults. Clinical signs often include unilateral pharyngodynia, a "hot potato" voice, unilateral swelling with uvular deviation, asymmetric palatal contraction, and trismus. Complications include infections of the deep neck spaces and mediastinitis, which require prompt recognition due to their severity. Rapid diagnosis is essential. While not consistently used, CT scanning provides excellent specificity. The management of a peritonsillar abscess is based on an individualized approach that combines antibiotic therapy with interventional procedures (aspiration, incision and drainage, or hot tonsillectomy). Although no clear consensus has emerged, a thorough clinical assessment remains central to guiding treatment.
