Three educational escape rooms developed independently by the authors in the field of geotechnics are presented. In each case, the participating students have the goal of freeing themselves from a geotechnical laboratory. Solution paths and examples of escape room puzzles are presented and provide inspiration for transferring them to other areas of civil engineering, such as laboratory exercises. Abstract

Use of escape rooms in the teaching of civil engineering

While escape rooms were successfully introduced into the entertainment industry many years ago, educational escape rooms are used much less frequently. This article explains what types of tasks and structures are possible in escape rooms and how they can also be used in university teaching to convey specialised content and solve engineering problems in a playful way. Three educational escape rooms developed independently by the authors in the field of geotechnics are presented.
