Abstract
A two-step method was developed for the synthesis of N,N-bis(silatranylmethyl)benzylamine. The structure of the new compound was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The silatranyl groups have different stereochemistry. Thus, the group containing the Si(1) atom exists in the Λ form, whereas the Si(2)-containing group exists in the Δ form. The carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen atoms of the N(CH2CH2O)3Si(2) moiety are disordered over two positions with similar occupancy factors, indicating two conformations of the silatranyl group involving the Si(2) atom. N,N-Bis(silatranylmethyl)benzylamine reduces a silver cation in an acetonitrile solution to form N,N-bis(silatranylmethyl)benzyl-amine nitrate and silver nanoparticles. The intermediates of this reaction were studied by EPR spectroscopy.
