Abstract

The activity concentrations of naturally occurring (226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 210Pb, 210Po) and anthropogenic (137Cs) radioisotopes were analysed in agricultural and non-agricultural soils in the vicinity of the nuclear facilities at Kalpakkam, India. Outdoor gamma absorbed dose rates were measured at 158 locations using a portable gamma dosimeter. Soil samples from 126 locations were analysed for individual radionuclide activities by gamma and alpha spectrometry. Statistical analysis of the data confirmed no significant difference in the concentrations of 40K, 232Th, 226Ra, and 210Po between the agricultural and non-agricultural soil types, while 210Pb levels differed significantly. The 137C activity in all the soil samples was < 0.1 Bq kg−1, confirming that this radioisotope is not released to the environment from the operating nuclear facilities.
