Abstract
The plane problem of an elastic layer resting on an elastically similar frictional half plane, which is subject to a line normal and shear force is studied. Emphasis is given to the effect of loading sequence, and problems of proportional loading and sequential loading (normal followed by shear) to the same force state are presented. The problem is solved principally by the use of a formulation based on a half-plane representing the sum of the actual half-plane plus layer and using dislocations to model the effects of slip and separation. The solution is guided by and validated by the use of the finite element method.
