Abstract

Food and agro-processing wastes contain various biomolecules which can be utilized for dyeing-cum-functional finishing of textiles. In the present work, mustard seed waste from the oil processing industry was utilized to extract biomolecules for dyeing-cum-functional finishing of wool using metallic and bio-mordants. The aqueous extraction of mustard seed waste (MSW) was carried out, and the extract was characterized using UV–Visible spectroscopy. MSW was also characterized by GC–MS analysis. The extract was applied to wool, and coloration and functional properties of dyed wool were analyzed. The dyed wool displayed beautiful shades along with excellent UV-protective activities (UV protection factor of more than 40). MSW was also analyzed for the presence of biomolecules to establish dye–fiber interactions resulting in durable color and functional properties. Dyed fabrics were also characterized by FTIR and SEM analysis.
