Abstract
A portable, visual and pH-responsive hydrogel microneedle patch was developed that integrates sampling and detection functions to provide an intuitive and rapid assessment of meat freshness. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) served as the hydrogel matrix, while the mixed dyes of methyl red (MR) and bromothymol blue (BB) were selected as the colorimetric indicators. The prepared BM/PVA/PVP microneedle patches exhibited satisfactory mechanical strength (up to 3.22 N per tip) and water absorption capacity (achieving a swelling rate of 189 %), enabling effective tissue penetration and tissue fluid extraction. Throughout the three defined stages of meat freshness (fresh, less fresh and spoiled), the BM/PVA/PVP microneedle patch demonstrated distinct color transitions from red to yellowish green to green as the pH value of the tissue fluid increased. Moreover, the patch efficiently extracted tissue fluid and provided a clear colorimetric response within 15 min. Therefore, the BM/PVA/PVP hydrogel microneedle patch holds promise for food safety applications as a portable, rapid and visual method for monitoring meat freshness.

The Microchemical Journal is a peer reviewed journal devoted to all aspects and phases of analytical chemistry and chemical analysis. The Microchemical Journal publishes articles which are at the forefront of modern analytical chemistry and cover innovations in the techniques to the finest possible limits. This includes fundamental aspects, instrumentation, new developments, innovative and novel methods and applications including environmental and clinical field.
Traditional classical analytical methods such as spectrophotometry and titrimetry as well as established instrumentation methods such as flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, gas chromatography, and modified glassy or carbon electrode electrochemical methods will be considered, provided they show significant improvements and novelty compared to the established methods.
