Abstract
This review explores the psychological challenges experienced by people with psoriasis. Psychological distress is associated with a wide range of challenges including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties and sleep disorders. Though psychological distress is prevalent and may significantly impact the quality of life, treatment outcomes and the delivery of healthcare, it is often unrecognised and untreated. The review explores why the assessment of the psychological impact of psoriasis is essential to meet the holistic needs of individuals with psoriasis. Multidisciplinary psychodermatology teams, using a stepped-care approach to addressing psychological distress, may be best placed to care for the needs of this population.
