Abstract

Poultry farming faces environmental challenges due to greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the importance of sustainable waste management. Poultry manure, including turkey litter, has the potential to generate biogas and renewable energy, but this potential has yet to be fully exploited. In this sense, this study evaluated the biogas generation potential of turkey litter and its effects on consecutive-use flocks, as well as explored strategies to mitigate environmental damage through a life cycle assessment. The results showed a negative effect of using turkey litter for several flocks on the potential for biogas generation, compromising up to 48 ± 6% of production. The use of turkey litter for 50 days in the facilities can generate up to 93.4 ± 4.6 NLCH4 kgFM−1. In addition, the life cycle assessment (LCA) compared different management strategies for turkey litter waste, including untreated storage and anaerobic digestion with energy recovery. The results showed that prioritizing anaerobic digestion, especially with the recovery of biogas for energy generation, is the strategy that has the least environmental impact, with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the potential to replace fertilizers and fossil fuels. On a national scale, leveraging turkey litter could generate around 2.43 × 104 MWh year−1 of electricity annually, mitigating approximately 34,000 tons of CO2eq. Thus, this study shows that improving waste management practices in the poultry sector enhances sustainability and promotes renewable energy generation, thereby making the sector more environmentally viable.
