Abstract
Land is an essential resource to underpin the development of urban agglomerations. Spatial configuration of urban agglomerations is extensively viewed as playing a vital role in influencing land use efficiency (LUE). However, little research has been done to explore whether spatial configuration affects LUE in a nonlinear manner, and few studies have investigated whether effects of spatial configuration on LUE varies across different transport network connectivity. This paper characterizes spatial configuration of urban agglomerations based on a bidimensional analysis, and examines nonlinear effects of spatial configuration on LUE, the heterogeneous effects under different transport network connectivity and mechanisms of influence, using data for major urban agglomerations in China. The results show that both the relationship between agglomeration level and LUE and that between polycentricity level and LUE follows a pattern of inverted U. The inflection point on the agglomeration level-LUE curve emerges earlier in urban agglomerations with stronger transport connectivity. The inflection point on the polycentricity level-LUE curve emerges later under stronger transport connectivity. Spatial configuration affects LUE through influencing infrastructure level, innovation generation and human capital level. The findings have important policy implications for driving optimization of spatial configuration of urban agglomerations and enhancing LUE.

Cities offers a comprehensive range of articles on all aspects of urban policy. It provides an international and interdisciplinary platform for the exchange of ideas and information between urban planners and policy makers from national and local government, non-government organizations, academia and consultancy. The primary aims of the journal are to analyse and assess past and present urban development and management as a reflection of effective, ineffective and non-existent planning policies; and the promotion of the implementation of appropriate urban policies in both the developed and the developing world.
