Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the normal values of acid steatocrit in Indian children of various age groups.

Methods: In this prospective analytical study, a total of 257 well babies from birth till 6 years of age were enrolled. Acid steatocrit was quantified by measuring the proportion of fatty layer, obtained after homogenization, acidification and centrifugation of freshly passed stools samples.

Results: The mean (SD) values of acid steatocrit (%) in 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and 12-72 months were 6.52 (1.28), 5.37 (0.70), 4.41 (1.04) and 3.59 (0.91), respectively. Statistically significant difference was observed in mean steatocrit across different age groups, with lower values in older age groups. The mean (SD) acid steatocrit (%) was significantly higher in preterms compared to term babies [7.07 (1.27) vs. 6.25 (1.20)].

Conclusion: The acid steatocrit values in Indian children, though at slight variance from published studies, were found to follow the same decreasing trend with advancing age.
