Abstract

Pain and anxiety are prevalent challenges affecting children undergoing medical procedures, significantly impacting their recovery and long-term well-being. Emerging technologies, particularly virtual reality (VR), offer promising nonpharmacological interventions for pain management and anxiety alleviation in pediatric care. Despite extensive research on VR as a pain management solution in adult populations, there has been a lack of similar in-depth studies on its use for children, highlighting the importance of further exploration in pediatric care. This editorial examines the innovative potential of VR in transforming pediatric healthcare, emphasizing its integration with child- and family-centered care principles. VR immerses children in engaging virtual environments, providing distraction, comfort, and personalized care during painful procedures. Long-term studies suggest that VR can have sustained positive impacts on pediatric patients' mental and physical health. Nurses play a pivotal role in implementing VR, leveraging it to deliver holistic, family-centered care that enhances the overall healthcare experience for children and their families. This paper also discusses the importance of digital health literacy and specialized training for healthcare providers to maximize the benefits of VR in clinical practice. Furthermore, advocacy for policy changes and funding is crucial for the widespread adoption of VR in pediatric healthcare.
