Abstract

Electrochemical technology was considered as eco-friendly and low operating cost for water treatment. In the research, the effect of electrolysis on seawater quality parameters, ability of disinfection and effect of turbidity were analyzed. Subsequently, effects of electrochemically treated seawater on early life stage of golden pompano golden were analyzed to obtain safety evaluation. As a result, with the increase of electric current, the pH and available chlorine gradually increased, oxidation reduction potential (ORP) firstly decreased and then increased, dissolved oxygen gradually decreased. After aeration for 24 h, the ORP returned to normal level. Electrolytic treatment accelerated the clarification of seawater significantly. Based on the result incubation in TCBS and CBA agar plate, bacteria in electrochemically treated seawater were significantly decrease, sterilizing rate of the negative-gram bacteria reached to 100 % under a operating current of 40 A. Hatchability, survival rate of yolk-sac larvae, larvae at first feeding stage and juvenile fish were decrease in electrochemically treated seawater, there were highest mortality in stage of larvae at first feeding and lowest mortality in juvenile fish bred in treated seawater. Growth traits of treated group were higher than these of control group, among of these growth traits, differences of body depth and fatness reached to significant. Reduced glutathione of fish in normal seawater was significantly lower than that of fish in electrolysis treated seawater. Oxidized glutathione was opposite. In general, electrochemically technology possesses positive effects on seawater parameters and disinfection. However, the electrolysis of seawater might result in negative effect on fish in early development stage. This research provided the insight of application of electrochemically treated seawater on aquaculture.

Aquaculture is an international journal for the exploration, improvement and management of all freshwater and marine food resources. It publishes novel and innovative research of world-wide interest on farming of aquatic organisms, which includes finfish, mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic plants for human consumption. Research on ornamentals is not a focus of the Journal. Aquaculture only publishes papers with a clear relevance to improving aquaculture practices or a potential application.
