Abstract
Emerging efforts in Saudi Arabia focus on humanizing parks and open spaces in line with Vision 2030. Academics emphasize their role in enhancing well-being and social engagement, yet there is a lack of studies that integrate spatial and statistical methods examining how neighborhood parks’ spatial characteristics integrate with their surrounding urban contexts. This study explores how different enclosure types—fully enclosed, semi-enclosed, and fully open—affect spatial dynamics and movement patterns in adjacent urban areas. Using Space Syntax methodology and statistical modeling, an axial map analysis was conducted for the three enclosure types, evaluating integration, choice, connectivity, and intelligibility within a prototype neighborhood park in northern Riyadh. Findings indicate that semi-enclosed parks enhance integration by regulating accessibility, while fully enclosed parks isolate the park, limiting interaction. Fully open parks promote access but weaken spatial structure. The study provides recommendations for KSA urban developers and highlights the need for further spatial analysis.
期刊介绍:
in Shams Engineering Journal is an international journal devoted to publication of peer reviewed original high-quality research papers and review papers in both traditional topics and those of emerging science and technology. Areas of both theoretical and fundamental interest as well as those concerning industrial applications, emerging instrumental techniques and those which have some practical application to an aspect of human endeavor, such as the preservation of the environment, health, waste disposal are welcome. The overall focus is on original and rigorous scientific research results which have generic significance.
Ain Shams Engineering Journal focuses upon aspects of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, environmental engineering, architectural and urban planning engineering. Papers in which knowledge from other disciplines is integrated with engineering are especially welcome like nanotechnology, material sciences, and computational methods as well as applied basic sciences: engineering mathematics, physics and chemistry.
