Abstract

A simplified procedure for estimating liquefaction-induced settlement is proposed within the conventional liquefaction analysis framework. Closed-form solutions and approximate methods for computing volumetric, shear-induced and ejecta-related settlements for level ground and shallow foundations are presented. The proposed approach aims to facilitate engineering assessment of liquefaction-induced settlement by placing greater focus on the: (a) engineering interpretation of computed settlements; (b) holistic evaluation of the response over a wide range of ground motion intensities; (c) identification of key variables that most significantly influence the settlement response; and (d) consideration of uncertainties in the estimates. The procedure is applicable to all types of liquefiable deposits and has accuracy consistent with the conventional simplified liquefaction analysis methodology.

The journal aims to encourage and enhance the role of mechanics and other disciplines as they relate to earthquake engineering by providing opportunities for the publication of the work of applied mathematicians, engineers and other applied scientists involved in solving problems closely related to the field of earthquake engineering and geotechnical earthquake engineering. Emphasis is placed on new concepts and techniques, but case histories will also be published if they enhance the presentation and understanding of new technical concepts.
