Abstract
Background: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) can be very confronting for patients.
Objective: This article provides general practitioners, emergency department physicians and other relevant primary care providers with an overview of causes, diagnosis and primary management of patients with SSNHL.
Discussion: The most common cause of SSNHL is idiopathic. SSNHL should be treated as an 'ear emergency' and urgent referral to ear, nose and throat surgery is warranted.
