He also became the director of the School of Medicine and involved in a fundraising campaign to purchase a house for the school. He was also the last director of the Saint Lazarus Hospital, where he studied and described the form of leprosy and the acute reaction that today are well-known with his name. He was one of the physicians of Emperor Maximilian I and of President Benito Juárez.
