Abstract

Introduction and objective

Numerous studies have focused on assessing the coexistence of autism and gender dysphoria. These two entities have been associated with an increased risk of concurrent mental health disorders, thereby elevating the risk of suicide. The aim of our work is to update the existing information regarding this relationship.

Materials and methods

A search for articles was conducted in the PubMed database, filtering from the date of the last meta-analysis published in May 2022, to provide an update on this information. Ultimately, 11 articles were selected.

Results

From the selected articles, all of them concluded that there was a direct relationship between autism and gender dysphoria.

Discussion and conclusion

Individuals with autism are more likely than the general population to experience gender dysphoria, and vice versa. Hence, a proper early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial.
