Abstract
Modeling of local load applications in embedded slabs using finite element method
In modern design practice, the structural analysis and design of ground-supported slabs is carried out using finite element software. Careful use of these calculation tools is essential, especially for thin slabs with high localized loads, such as those found in industrial floors or container terminal floors with individual loads from high racks or containers, as well as wheel loads from forklifts. For an accurate analysis, the element size (mesh refinement) of the finite element model must be carefully chosen in addition to an appropriate representation of the soil. These parameters significantly influence the resulting internal forces and thus the design. In this work, a sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate different modeling approaches (plate or solid elements) and mesh sizes. The aim is to analyze the effects of load smearing and load distribution in discretized finite element models for supported slabs. The results show that the mesh dependence is significant, especially for high local loads. Depending on the element type and mesh fineness, there is also a clear difference whether the analysis is based on nodal or element mean values. Finally, practical recommendations for modeling and analysis are given to enable more accurate and efficient design.
