Abstract
The virial theorem is derived from the action principle and variational method in classical and quantum mechanics by exploiting the scale invariance of the action and the Hamiltonian operator. Alternative approaches like the matrix mechanics, the Schrödinger equation, and the Hellmann–Feynman theorem are mentioned. The unifying role of scale invariance and action principle in these frameworks is discussed.
