Abstract

Bellamya aeruginosa is an economically important freshwater gastropod. Recently, a bacterial shell erosion disease has frequently occurred in B. aeruginosa farms, and has become an important factor threatening the development of B. aeruginosa aquaculture. To explore the cause of disease, we dissected the diseased B. aeruginosa and isolated a dominant strain named Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain GX2021. The pathogenicity of the isolate GX2021 to B. aeruginosa was determined by a direct challenge experiment. Drug sensitivity experiments revealed that P. aeruginosa strain GX2021 was highly sensitive to ceftriaxone sodium, and moderately sensitive to carbenicillin. A PCR assay for rapid detection and identification of P. aeruginosa based on the DNA sequence of the P. aeruginosa strain GX2021 dnaA gene was developed to detect P. aeruginosa. These findings provided a theoretical foundation and practical guidance for prevention and control of shell erosion disease caused by P. aeruginosa in farmed B. aeruginosa.

The Journal of Invertebrate Pathology presents original research articles and notes on the induction and pathogenesis of diseases of invertebrates, including the suppression of diseases in beneficial species, and the use of diseases in controlling undesirable species. In addition, the journal publishes the results of physiological, morphological, genetic, immunological and ecological studies as related to the etiologic agents of diseases of invertebrates. The Journal of Invertebrate Pathology is the adopted journal of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology, and is available to SIP members at a special reduced price.
