Abstract

All-optical modulation has aroused great interest with the fast development of the Photonics Information Age. However, traditional light-light interaction usually needs strong pumping power to accumulate sufficiently large nonlinear modulation and is restricted to a single working wavelength. Here, the light-addressable polychromatic holographic display is proposed via multi-encoded chiral superstructures. The shape and the color of the holographic images are encoded in the photo-active cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) superstructures and then can be reproduced on demand. The multi-encoded CLC superstructures can be modulated by light and on the contrary, have the ability to modulate light, serving as a promising medium that incorporates integrated functions for the storage, addressing and readout of light. Five polychromatic holographic displays are vividly demonstrated, verifying the multi-wavelength processing ability. This work provides a practical option for compact, broadband and addressable all-optical modulation, promoting various applications of optical communication, sensing, and computing.
